The current Champions are Spain while the United States have won the competition 32 times while Australia have done it 28 times. Conceived in 1899 the tournament by four members of the Harvard University tennis team, their intention was to challenge the British to a tennis competition. Consent granted by the their respective lawn tennis associations, one of the four Harvard players, Dwight F. Davis, designed the tournament format and ordered an appropriate sterling silver designed by William B. Durgin's of Concord, New Hampshire. Davis moved in to politics and soon became a prominent politician in the United States in the 1920s, and the tournament was named after him. The Davis Cup is formatted in such a way that the member countries are distributed in to zones. While the World Group is top of the ladder and teams in it play on a knock out basis. Entry to the World Group is determined by winners of the Group One in each zone playing against the losers of the first round in the World Group.
Below the World Group are the Four Zones, with each of these zones having four groups or levels. The groups 1 and 2 play a knock-out competition while the lower two are involved with a round robin competition. The winners of each group move to the one above, while the losers are relegated to the group below. There are two notable exceptions: Group Four countries are not relegated since there is no group to relegate to, and as stated above Group One winners play-off against losers of the World Group first round to decide who will be participate in the World Group the following.
